Artificial Transmutation

One instrument in which artificial transmutation takes place is called a particle accelerator. By using a particle accelerator, scientist are able to bombard atomic nuclei with high speed protons or neutrons. As the atomic nuclei are forced to absorb additional protons or neutrons, new elements are produced.

All of the elements with atomic numbers greater than 92, the number of uranium, were produced by artificial transmutation. These elements are called synthetic or transuranium elements. All of the synthetic elements are radioactive.

Radioactive isotopes of natural elements can be made by using a similar technique. Example, by shooting neutrons at the nucleus of an iodine atom, scientist have been able to make I-131, a radioactive isotope of iodine. A particle accelerator can also be used to create ab element from several other elements. For example, scientists can now change mercury and lead into gold.

Abstract: The radiation processing of long-lived radiotoxic elements is based on transmutation reactions under the action of various particles and energies. Among the different particle sources something very promising is the proton accelerator. The present work studied the process radiation deactivation in the stationary proton flux as functions of their flux density and energy. The Batemant-Robinson differential equations were were solved.

I feel that transmutation of lead into gold is inappropriate to place on the website and you should know many of the people who tried that died from  radiation sickness (leukemia)  and that such a process also releases dioxin fumes which are also immunotoxic.
