Catastrophes

Scientist, prophets and many religions have, and are predicting severe weather changes, meteors and earthquakes that could become cataclysmic catastrophes on earth. This is becoming prevalent in the current El Nino weather patterns. With that we have the possibility of radiation waste sites running a muck and the worst scenario, is the possibility of nuclear melt downs. Many engineers and nuclear specialists feel that reactors will survive such catastrophes and if it gets too bad they can pull the cores, but with a time limit of actually shutting down a reactor and the panic effect of catastrophes, that safeguard is very limited. Although fail safes are in place to automatically shut down or render the reactors safe, a direct hit from an earthquake or catastrophe may prove the fail safes unable to act in time. Also to note, an earthquake happens with out notice. It does not take a very creative mind to see the possibilities of what could happen to the earth and it's inhabitants if we get more than one melt down in a given time.

Our energy needs have caused the problems of not having safe places to store nuclear waste. This waste can remain deadly for 20,000 years. Thousands of adults and children are dying each year of cancer from contaminates of nuclear waste, bomb sites, uranium mines, even the cooling water and steam from nuclear reactors. This and the continuing nuclear waste which is leaking into our water, food, agriculture and air, need immediate attention. Ever growing radiation problems and the correlation between radiation and the ever rising rate in cancers, deformities, depletion of immune systems in human and animals is rising to epidemic proportions.

Catastrophes
Space related Nuclear Accidents
Close to one dozen reported case of space missions involving nuclear power or onboard radiation have met with accidents. In which all have impacted the earth.

Asteroid
What if an asteroid hits earth near a nuclear reactor or waste site?

Floods
Radiation can easily wash down stream in floods.

Terrorist activity
GDR focuses on what could happen through the Nuclear Control Institute.

Global Warming
Earth's surface has warmed since the start of the Industrial revolution.

Earthquakes
At any time earthquakes could hit near reactors and waste site, causing a possible meltdown or contamination chambers to break.

Accidents
Only a few citations have been place on this page, but there are countless others.

London (February 25, 1998 10:06 p.m.EST http://www.nando.net) - Children and an elderly man may be getting exposed to damaging levels of radiation from nuclear plants because of flawed data used to set safety limits, New Scientist magazine said on Wednesday. The weekly journal said a study by British epidemiologist Alice Stewart showed the very young and the elderly were more sensitive to radiation damage than experts had realized. Her study is due to be published by Scientific and Technological Options Assessment unit of the European Parliament.

Health
20 million exposed Secret Fallout  Which radiation is the most harmful

20 million exposed to radioactivity

Effects on Human
Approximately 20 million former Soviets were exposed to radioactivity released at
Chernobyl. In 1981-1985, the number of thyroid cancer cases in Ukraine was about 5 per
year. In 1986-1991, the number increased to 22 cases per year. However, during these last
five years, the number has even increased to about 43 cases per year. The number of
pregnancies with complications has been growing among women living in the affected
area. People in those areas have become paralyzed with fear. They are afraid to marry and afraid to have families. It seems that as if the Chernobyl incident is still occurring through
the a new way of attack, the psychological one, the deadly FEAR.

 SECRET FALLOUT
LOW-LEVEL RADIATION FROM HIROSHIMA TO THREE-MILE ISLAND
    ISBN O-07-061242-0

The following is a short excerpt from Dr. Ernest Sternglass’s book.
ERNEST STERNGLASS

In "Secret Fallout" Dr. Ernest Sternglass, Professor of Radiation Physics at the University of Pittsburgh, presents the evidence he has for twenty years battled to bring before the public--the cumulative, devastating effects of low-level radiation on our health. In the early 1960s, when nuclear testing filled the rains with radioactivity, Dr. Sternglass discovered a related increase in fetal deaths, infant mortality, and certain kinds of cancer. His studies were disregarded, discredited, or suppressed--even though documents available under the Freedom of Information Act make clear that top-level government officials were aware of the accuracy of his findings. Nuclear power plants became the topic of his studies in 1970, and he gathered data showing that nuclear emissions have
resulted in increased genetic defects, mental retardation, and death among newborns, as well as death due to lung disease in all age groups. Nuclear power plants have nonetheless proliferated. Dr. Sternglass made headlines in 1979 by a study linking the decline in Scholastic Aptitude Test scores that has puzzled educators to past atomic testing.  Most recently, he has looked at the evidence of the aftereffects of the Three-Mile Island incident and found that, contrary to popular opinion, tragedy was not averted:  Infant and fetal deaths rose dramatically in the months following the accident.

"Secret Fallout" is the story of a courageous scientist struggling to uncover the dangers of nuclear power;  it is a shocking expose of the indifference and neglect of officials of the government and apologists for the nuclear industry.  But most of all it is a stern warning that unless we face up to the damage we have already done we cannot prevent our future destruction.

"Professor Sternglass's courageous voice has helped keep alive the debate on the health effects of low-level radiation, a debate that the military, the nuclear industry, and even some biologists and physicians have tried to bury.  His new book, {Secret Fallout:  Low- Level Radiation from Hiroshima to Three Mile Island}, is an important new contribution to that debate and should be required reading for all who are concerned with their own health, the health of their children, and of their children's children."

Which type of radiation is the most harmful?
This question, like many is difficult to answer with few words. Many readers may not have even known that different kinds of radiation exist. If you don't, see What are the different types of radiation?

To determine which type of radiation is most harmful, we must first determine how far each one can travel. The distance that radiation travels is important for two reasons:

1.The further it travels the more easily it will get to your body. 2.The distance it travels in your body, affects how much damage it does.

There are various things to consider when determining how far radiation will travel. For a discussion on this, see How does radiation get stopped?

Alpha particles can not even penetrate a piece of ordinary paper, beta particles are stopped by a thin sheet of aluminum, while it takes an inch of lead (at least) to stop gamma rays. Thus, alpha and beta particles can not even penetrate through a person's skin, while gamma rays can get into the body and cause damage. For external radiation, GAMMA RAYS ARE THE MOST HARMFUL

Of course, to every rule, there is at least one exception. If you eat or inhale an isotope that is an alpha emitter, it doesn't have to penetrate your skin anymore to get into the body. Some alpha emitters, when inhaled, can even pass into your blood and irradiate your whole body that way. In these situations, the alphas are most harmful because the side effect of slowing down quickly is that they deposit all their energy in a short distance, thus concentrating their effect.

It is because of this effect that smokers receive a much higher annual dose of radiation than non-smokers. Radioactive polonium (from the radon decay chain) gets deposited from the air onto tobacco leaves when they are dried. When the smoker inhales the smoke, they are also inhaling polonium and other isotopes in the decay chain, all of which are alpha and beta emitters. This radiation is harmful once it gets into the lungs.

Comment

We can't leave it to others who have failed in telling the full extent of the radiation dilemma. It is a fact known to most of us that there are brilliant people out there, scientists, physicists, inventors, and researchers who have discovered ways and means to circumvent most of our wasteful ways; but their light is being extinguished by the few greedy ones at the top of corporations and nations, for their own concerns.

So we are led to go blindly along for our own selfish comfort and to our downfall. For now the Deactivation of Radiation is the most current concern. For the future of all mankind we must change our ways..
