Mr. F.R. Sarker ( Fazlur Rahman Sarker ) obtained
his M.A. in Political Science from the University of
Dhaka in 1967. He started his career as a journalist and worked in
a number of news papers in Dhaka. He worked as an Auditor of
Water and Power Development Authority till 1973 then
left the job to start his own business. In March 1971, when
Pakistani Army cracked down in Dhaka and shot down thousands of
Bangla people , he went into hideout in rural areas and joined
the Liberation Forces. In December , 1971 when Pakistani Army lost
the war and surrendered , he
returned to Dhaka.
In 1972, he was one of the founding members to
establish " Bangladesh Handloom Industries Association
" and was elected as its General Secretary ,
which he held for about 10 years. He was elected as a Member of the
Executive Committee of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers
of Commerce & Industry in 1973 - 75 and Member
of the Sub-Committees of different Ministries of Government of Bangladesh.
Upon his personal initiative and drafting of project profile , the
Government of Bangladesh had established ' Bangladesh Handloom
Board ' in 1976 to look after the interests of
3 million Handloom Weavers in Bangladesh. In 1972 ,he worked with
the Chief of the UNROD ( United Nations Relief Operations in
Dhaka ) and assisted him to formulate
plans for development of Handloom Industry in Bangladesh - which provided
80% clothing's required for its people.
From 1969, Mr. Sarker started his Astronomical activities
and writing articles on Astronomy in different news papers.
In 1979 , he was made the Head of the Sky Observational Team of
the
Science Museum , Dhaka. In February, 1980, when a Total Solar
Eclipse swept over Bangladesh, his Team arranged the Observation
of this celestial spectacle and hundreds of people participated in
this programme. He was instrumental in forming the '
Bangladesh Astronomical Society ' in 1985
and was elected its General Secretary. From December 1985
to April 1986 , he conducted the Observational Programme of
Halley's Comet and thousands of people got the chance to peep through
8" dia Mead's Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope and to enjoy the Halley's
Comet. In 1987 , he conducted a 3-month Course on Astronomy in Science
Museum which helped lots of people of Bangladesh to learn about Astronomy.
In 1996 he was made an honorary Member of the Confederation
of Indian Amateur Astronomers and he attended the Annual Meet of the CIAA
in
New Delhi in 1997 and in Shillong ( eastern India) in 1998.
In 1997 , he became a Member of the " The Planetary Society " , USA.
He conducted lots of discussion meetings on Astronomy with popular
lectures .In January 1988 , he conducted a spectacular
programme on ' Remembrance of Challenger Mission ' in
which Consul of the U.S.Embassy in Dhaka had participated as
a Chief Guest. He writes articles on Astronomy
for a number of papers , conducts TV programmes,
Radio Talks and gives lectures in Astronomical meetings . His
ephimery " " Rater Akash " (
Night Sky) is being published monthly in a local
Bengla daily ' Janakantha ' . He has his own telescope and
he conducts sky observation almost regularly.
Professionally, Mr.Sarker is a businessman. He has one of the biggest Screen Printing factories in Bangladesh which is engaged in the printing of T.Shirts, Jackets, Sportswears, Childrenwears etc. for the USA , Canada and European markets. He has other business like Exports of Ready-made Garments and supplies of Astronomical Instruments etc.
Mr.Sarker is one of the founders of ' Village Development
Association ', a humanitarian organization which is engaged in
helping the poor and distressed people in their education
,foods and medicines. VDA was established in 1970 and since
then he has been acting as its President.
From his boy hood, he has developed a hobby to help the poor people
particularly in the time of epidemics and floods , in his native
village area , about 120 miles north- west of Dhaka and
he is loved by them very much. Under assistance by
World Vision, USA, he conducted a massive Relief Operation
Programme in October , 1988 during the time of over flood
in his native village areas distributing
rice and medicines to thousands of flood affected people . He is associated
with a number of Social and Humanitarian organizations in Bangladesh
. He is the Life Member of the " National Blind
Society of Bangladesh " .
Mr. Sarker is a widely traveled man. Privately as well as a Member of the Government Delegations , he has traveled lots of countries around the world including the USA.
He has two children , Daughter's name is Luna and Son's name is Apollo.
